Chapter 25

Elle watched Nolan manipulate the image on the screen, his words repeating through her mind. Tomorrow. What would it be like to look forward to the possibilities instead of dreading them?

Nolan zoomed in on a stretch of land, the screen blurring before coming back into focus. The image revealed trees and foliage and brief stretches of road.

“Are we going to be able to see anything with this?”

“It’s not looking good.” He clicked his mouse and zoomed in farther. “The last reading we had on the truck’s GPS signal was right here.”

He scanned the area around the last-known coordinates. Still no evidence of the presence of the control vehicle.

“Nothing.” Nolan let out a sigh. “I guess we shouldn’t have expected this to be easy.”

“What about these other files?” Elle pointed at six other video clips that had been uploaded with the satellite feed they were currently watching.

“Those are from the surrounding area in the hours the truck should have passed through.”

“Sounds like we’re having a movie night tonight.”

Nolan’s attention turned to her. “If I fix you dinner, does that make it a date?”

“I’m not sure.” Elle wavered. She couldn’t deny the chemistry sizzling between them, nor could she ignore the fear that her heartstrings would get tangled with Nolan’s only to get severed.

“Maybe we should take a real break,” Nolan suggested. “There’s a great Indian food restaurant across the street.”

“You want to go out in public?” Elle shook her head. “I don’t think I’m ready to risk that.”

“I can understand that, but I wasn’t planning on eating there. We can eat in.”

“I know it’s silly, but I’d rather not be alone.”

“No problem.” Nolan stood. “I picked up some flounder at the market yesterday. Does that work for you?”

“Sounds good.” Elle reached for her crutches. “I’ll come help.”

They went into the kitchen and worked companionably while Nolan seasoned the fish and Elle prepared a salad.

“You know, for someone who is allergic to so many fruits and vegetables, you eat a lot of salad.”

“I like salad, and it’s something I can’t order in restaurants because there always seems to be something in them that I can’t have.” Elle put some plastic wrap over the top of the salad bowl and put it in the refrigerator.

As soon as Nolan put the fish into the oven, he set a timer. “The fish will take about twenty minutes. Want to start the first video while we wait?”

“Sure.” Using her crutches, she went back into the living room.

“How’s your ankle?”

Elle set her crutches aside and put weight on her foot. “It’s still sore, but I think the swelling has gone down.”

“You’ll be running around again in no time.”

“I don’t mind the running part, but I’d prefer to do it without anyone shooting at me.”

“Demanding, aren’t you?”

Even though she heard the humor in his voice, she adopted a serious tone. “How many times have you been in situations like this one?”

“What do you mean?” Nolan asked. “Times when I’ve been on protection detail with someone?”

“No. When you were on protection detail when people were shooting at you?”

“This is the first time.
